Great books to read with your child when they start school
In a few days your child may be starting pre-school or school. Some of you may have younger children who are enviously watching their elder sibling put on their uniforms and stride out to big schools. There is so much excitement (and other strong feelings too) to content with, and we find a good book is the perfect foil to start a conversation about them.
The book ‘Alfie and the Big Boys’ by Shirely Hughes explores the dramas of playtime at pre-school and big-school. Alfie watches the ‘big-boys’ through the fence and imitates their amazing games. How he wishes he could be like them!
Read this book with your child and talk about what they think school will be like, what games will they play, what are they excited about or worried about. Talking about how characters might feel or behave is a great way of discussing feelings without anxiety.
Other great starting school books include:
I Am Too Absolutely Small for School by Lauren Child
Come to School Too, Blue Kangaroo by Emma Chichester Clark
Starting School by Janet and Allan Alberg
Boris Starts School by Carrie Weston and Tim Warnes
